The Materials Genome Institue of Shanghai University and Qian Weichang College jointly started the undergraduate education. Since 2014, we have begun to explore the education direction of “Materials for the Characteristic of Material Genes”. In this direction, in 2016, the application for the new major of “Material Design Science and Engineering” was approved by the Ministry of Education and officially became an ad secondary major under the first-level discipline of materials science. The material design major is newly added to the professional catalogue of the Ministry of Education, and Shanghai University has become the first professional enrollment unit in the country.

This major adopts advanced teaching facilities. At present, the online teaching management platform has been launched. Pre-class preparation, literature reading, video browsing, interactive discussion, and analytical Q&A through the network can greatly promote the reform of educational teaching methods and provide necessary research-based teaching condition.

In terms of faculty, there are currently 54 in-service faculty members, including 46 teachers (24 professors, 16 associate professors, 6 lecturers), 7 experimental technicians, and 2 administrative and student staff. Among them, there are 6 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 4 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (including 4 part-time employees), 1 chief scientist of 973, and 4 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. One winner of the Shanghai Thousand Talents Program, one winner of the Outstanding Youth Science Fund, seven winners of the Shanghai Oriental Scholar Program, and two winners of the Shanghai Pujiang Talent Program.

In terms of student development, there are 81 students in the Qianweichang College of Shanghai University who have selected the material gene training class. There are 11 students who have graduated successfully in 2013, and more than 70% of them choose to continue their postgraduate studies. There are Fudan University in China, and there are Kafts University, Missouri University of Science and Technology, and University of Laguilla in Italy. Since the enrollment of materials design science and engineering in 2016, there have been 31 students, many of whom have already published SCI articles with the first author.
